Coming out as LGBTI
Coming out means telling others about your sexual orientation or gender identity. For many, it is an important part of living openly and authentically, but it can also be a process that looks different depending on the environment, life situation and safety.
Many people think of 'coming out' as something that happens once, but in reality it is an ongoing process. Every time you meet new people - at work, in healthcare, at a party, or in a new circle of friends - you may need to decide if, when and how you want to share your identity. For some it feels natural and easy, for others it can be something that requires courage and thought every time.
Society has become more open, and many people find that they receive positive reactions. At the same time, there are still norms and prejudices that can make it difficult or unsafe to be open in all situations. The most important thing is to come out on your own terms - when it feels right and at a pace that feels good to you. No one is obliged to tell everyone everything.
For some, coming out is never an option - and that's okay. They may live in an environment where it doesn't feel safe, or they may not see the need to label their identity. There are also people who, for example, have sex with people of the same sex but do not identify as gay or bisexual. Identity and sexuality are complex and individual, and everyone has the right to decide for themselves how they define themselves - or if they even want to define themselves at all.
For some, it is a process of self-awareness before telling others. It can be helpful to first talk to someone you trust, a friend, a partner or a support group. No matter how and when you choose to come out, it is a personal journey - and you always have the right to set your own boundaries.
Coming out is not just about saying the words - it's about being fully yourself, on your own terms, every day. Feel free to write to us in our chat if you have any questions about coming out or if you need to share your thoughts.
